The Gorge may be my new favorite action film, which isn’t much but still. The film follows Dasa and Levi, two snipers from Lithuania and the United States respectively. Both have been loners due to their work and death of their family members. Dasa’s father tells her that he’ll be killing himself on Valentine’s Day due to his terminal cancer, saying he wants to go out on his own terms.
The film follows the two of them as they get stationed at the East and West towers of The Gorge, a mysterious and foggy abyss in the middle of the wilderness. They don’t know why they’re there or what they’re guarding, all they know is that they are in complete isolation and are not supposed to talk to one another.
Dasa, a rebel to her core, is the first one to break the no-contact order. She begins writing questions to Levi on a pad of paper. The two begin communicating back and forth through writing. By halfway through the film, they’re falling for each other and Levi has the bright idea to set up a zip line between the two towers to go see Dasa. Their' blooming relationship is cute, though sometimes a little surface level but we can chalk that up to the long-distance of their relationship.
Once they are finally in each other’s arms, the plot has no choice but to launch the couple into chaos. After a romantic evening an unfortunate explosion severes the zip line and plunges Levi into the toxic gorge. Dasa, like any sane woman in love, gears up and joins him down there. The two then find each other and explore the gorge finding out that a private company, Dark Lake, is using the gorge as research to build super soldiers.
Going out on their own terms, Dasa and Levi blow up the cloaking satellites revealing the gorge to the world and triggering the Stray dog protocol. All the while the CEO of DarkLake is hunting down Levi, planning to take him out like all his predecessors. Levi almost dies due to drone related injuries and a cliff; but he and Dasa reunite in France.
The film is a fun action romance that is set up nicely. It is not going to win any awards, but I would definitely rewatch it which is an accomplishment on its own.
